Masking Requirements at ISD 318
Per Governor Walz executive order 20-81, a face covering must be worn in all indoor buildings. Face coverings can include a paper or disposable face mask, a cloth face mask, a scarf, a bandanna, a two-ply neck gaiter, or a religious face covering. Per the order, select staff and students may use face shields without masks. In this case, face shields should cover the entire face. A half-shield is not appropriate.
In the following situations a shield is considered an appropriate face covering:
- Among students in Kindergarten through grade 8, when wearing a face covering is problematic.
- By teachers (all grades), when wearing a face covering may impede the educational process.
- For staff, students, or visitors who cannot tolerate a face-covering due to a developmental, medical, or behavioral health condition.
- For staff providing direct support student services, when a face-covering impedes the service being provided.
In each of these situations, while using a face shield, social distancing of 6 feet should be maintained. Face shields do not offer the same protection as a mask.
At ISD 318, we will comply with the executive order. Face coverings must be worn in ISD 318 buildings. When alone, such as when working in an office or a cubicle with walls higher than face level when social distancing is maintained, in an enclosed indoor area, in a vehicle, or in the cab of heavy equipment or machinery, a face covering is not required. In such situations, persons should still carry face coverings to be prepared to wear when no longer alone.
